Health Testing

We believe in health testing.

We would never ethically breed without first checking out Neena’s hips, elbows, eyes, and heart. The wonderful news is her OFA scores are in:

Hips: Excellent
Elbows: Normal
Heart: Normal/Clear
Eyes: Normal

Excellent is the highest hip score possible out of 7 possibilities. The seven scores are: Normal (Excellent, Good, Fair), Borderline, and Dysplastic (Mild, Moderate, Severe).

Only 33% of labradors judged by the OFA in 2022 received this glowing score.

Per the OFA: “This classification is assigned for superior conformation in comparison to other animals of the same age and breed. There is a deep seated ball (femoral head) which fits tightly into a well-formed socket (acetabulum) with minimal joint space. There is almost complete coverage of the socket over the ball.”

Why is this important? As a puppy buyer it helps ease your mind that your puppy is not prone to developing hip or elbow dysplasia later in life. Purchasing from an ethical breeder helps ensures the breed progresses for the future and only high quality animals are bred.

When Neena was 4 months we enrolled her with the University of Missouri’s Thompson Laboratory for Regenerative Orthopaedics bio marker study. They are researching a new way to predict Canine Hip Dysplasia (CHD) by looking at blood and urine samples in puppies between 4 and 6 months old.

We have provided blood, urine, and radiographs of her hips and elbows at one year of age. This is all at our own cost to help the study and better the breed.

Now at 2 years we have her full scores in and hopefully their biomarker study has a little more data to help future dogs.

Read about the clinical significance of this data.

OFA application for those also looking to enroll their puppies.

Neena's Results

We enrolled Neena in a biomarker study with the University of Missouri and the Orthopedic Foundation of Animals when she was just 4 months old. Now, 2 years later we’ve got her final OFA results – Excellent hips, normal elbows, normal/clear heart.

We have tested Neena using Embark Health and found zero genetic issues.

Centronuclear Myopathy, D Locus, Degenerative Myelopathy, Exercise Induced Collapse, Hereditary Nasal Parakeratosis, Hyperuricosuria, Macular Corneal Dystrophy, Narcolepsy, Progressive Retinal Atrophy, Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency, and Skeletal Dysplasia 2.
